1990-1991 REGULAR SEASON
The Charlotte Hornets nabbed Kendall Gill with the fifth overall pick in the 1990 NBA Draft, hoping he could duplicate his exploits from a fine collegiate career at the University of Illinois. He had helped lead the Illini to the NCAA Final Four as a junior in 1989, teaming with future NBA players Nick Anderson and Marcus Liberty. As a senior he led the Big Ten Conference in scoring with 20.0 points per game, becoming the first Illinois player to accomplish the feat since 1943. Gill made an instant impact with the Hornets as the only Charlotte player to appear in all 82 games. He averaged 11.0 points, earning a berth on the NBA All-Rookie First Team and establishing Hornets rookie records for both steals (104) and assists (303). He participated in the Slam-Dunk Championship during the 1991 NBA All-Star Weekend in Charlotte and finished eighth.

1991-1992 REGULAR SEASON
Gill led the Hornets and ranked 18th in the league in scoring (20.5 ppg) in only his second year in the NBA. A multifaceted player because of his size and quickness, he finished second on the club in assists (4.2 apg) and fourth in rebounding (5.1 rpg). He led the Hornets in scoring 32 times during the season, including a then career-high 32 points on April 1 against the Bulls in his hometown of Chicago. Gill ranked 13th in the NBA with 1.95 steals per game. He also blocked 46 shots for the season, third most on the team. The talented guard pulled down a season-high 13 rebounds on December 20 against the Houston Rockets and set a franchise record with 7 steals on two occasions, the second time on March 23 against the Nets at New Jersey.

1992-1993 REGULAR SEASON
Although hampered by injuries in his third NBA season, Gill was part of one of the NBA's most potent three-pronged attacks. At 24 years old, he was the elder statesman in a talented trio that included Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning. Gill's average of 16.9 points per game ranked third on the team behind Johnson's 22.1 and Mourning's 21.0. The dynamic trio led the Hornets to their first-ever playoff appearance, in which Charlotte upset the Boston Celtics in the first round before losing to the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. Despite missing 13 games with recurring ankle problems, Gill scored 20 or more points 20 times during the season. He had his best game on February 14 against the Detroit Pistons, totaling 27 points and 10 rebounds. The third-year guard contributed 17.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per game in nine playoff appearances.
